Provide technical support and services to the Wideband C-SSE, WGS, Global Broadcast Service (GBS), and Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS) SSEs in execution of responsibilities associated with terminal and modem certification, to include performing WB SATCOM terminal and modem performance certification engineering and facilitating terminal and modem operations and planning support.
Duties and Responsibilities
- This role provides critical engineering and technical support to Satellite System Engineering (SSEs) to ensure successful interoperability between earth terminals and satellites. The position supports a broad range of activities, including earth terminal certification, on-orbit and post-launch testing and analysis, anomaly resolution, and earth terminal network planning, management, and control — all in support of Wideband SATCOM operations.
- A key function involves evaluating terminal and modem performance certification reports at every phase of the certification process. The role requires generating engineering-based assessments for each report to determine whether the equipment meets published performance standards. When systems fail to meet those standards, the engineer must provide technical guidance and actionable recommendations to vendors, Government PMs, or the Wideband C-SSE staff. These recommendations often involve modifications to system designs or configurations to bring hardware into compliance.
- Another essential duty includes supporting test and evaluation efforts during military SATCOM on-orbit testing and operational evaluations. This involves contributing to anomaly resolution processes and recommending system changes or updates based on test results or operational findings.
- The position also plays a role in evolving system standards by evaluating emerging SATCOM technologies and recommending updates to current performance certification requirements and processes. This includes reviewing and revising test procedures as needed to ensure alignment with current technological capabilities and mission needs.
- In addition, the role supports the management of Wideband Satellite Communications (SATCOM) Operational Management System (WSOMS) data. Responsibilities include maintaining and updating both online and offline terminal and modem static databases. The engineer uses WSOMS for SATCOM mission planning and must accurately interpret the performance and functionality of terminals and modems to build reliable performance models within the system.
- This role requires deep technical knowledge of SATCOM systems, strong analytical skills to assess equipment performance, and the ability to collaborate across engineering teams, Government stakeholders, and vendors. The work ensures that Wideband SATCOM terminals and modems perform reliably and are fully interoperable with military satellite systems, enabling effective global communication for military operations.
- Provide the status of assigned tasks via both prepared and ad hoc oral briefings to senior personnel.
- Be able to develop written instructions, procedures, schematics and other technical data deliverables and documentation, as applicable.
